| How do I Become A Hornet!
It’s simple…really! All you have to do is have some free time, some loose ‘dosh’, a willingness to win and a good attitude!
Our practices are geared towards all age groups (from 18 years old and up), gender and skill levels. Our coaches are paid professionals from overseas and will be able to identify where you would be best suited playing. Currently we run a very competitive Premiere side (7 of the last 8 city finals) a seconds squad who last year should have won the Spring Shield (if not for a seldom used clause in the rules!), a Third Division squad for those of us who have seen our day come and go and those bound for higher levels, an Old Boys (+35 years) that play in (what can best be described as) a ‘fun recreational’ league (with more pints being consumed than passes made) and lastly (but certainly not least!) our Women’s side which after undergoing a trying year last with rebuilding is playing in the competitive Alberta Women’s First Division.
Our teams practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 6:30pm at Lord Beaverbrook High School (North Field) weather permitting starting in Mid-April running to mid/late September. Practices usually run until 8:00 - 8:30.
Games are generally played on Saturday at the Sheperd Road Rugby Facility with third division and Old Boys playing on the Friday nights. Occasionally there are games out of town, road trips to Banff, Lethbridge, Red Deer, (for 2nd/3rds) and the odd trip to Edmonton (for First division Women and Men.) are usually great events and most club members look forward to these with much anticipation.
Yearly dues are as follows:
DUES TO BE ANNOUNCED APRIL 1ST 2005
In addition to paying your dues, we require that a minimum of four (4) bingos be completed by each player every calendar year. These usually run from 5pm-10pm every couple of months. This money goes to paying for our coaches and new equipment/jerseys every season.
What do I get for my MONEY?
Glad you asked! Your dues cover items such as Canadian Rugby Union and Alberta Rugby Union dues (most of that is insurance with some of it going to fund coaching/refereeing clinics and assisting our National/Provincial Teams). Some of it goes to paying for our practice facilities, and some goes to the Calgary Rugby Union for maintenance and upgrades of our fine playing fields. What little is left over helps to fund all of our costs. With every game that you play, there is a certified professional trainer standing by to assist in taping and (heaven forbid!) assessing and treating on-field injuries, (the tape is included in your costs) also equipment costs (balls, tackle bags, scrum machine maintenance etc.), repairing/replacing jerseys, new socks, are required every season and dip into your dues premiums. What is left over (about $.38) goes into our coaching along with the money that we raise from bingos. It’s still the cheapest game in town!
Great! How Do I sign up?
The Hornets opening registration will take place at the following:
Calgary Rugby Union Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th April 9am - 2pm each day
or a phone call/e-mail is all that you need or just merely showing up at one of our practice sessions. Afterwards, one of our representatives will walk you through the whole almost painless process.
Now where are those numbers?
