The Game We Play
Past and Present
Legend has it that the game of rugby union has its roots in an English town called Rugby, where a young boy grew tired of playing soccer at school and decided instead to pick up the ball in his hands and run with it.
Today, Rugby Union (more commonly known as "rugby") is prevalent throughout the world. In Calgary, it's played at almost every age by boys, girls, men, and women.
Safety First
Despite its reputation for being a rough sport, rugby promotes safety in all its laws.
For example, the collision-style "tackle" common in American and Canadian football (and even in hockey) is illegal in rugby. Instead, tacklers redirect the momentum of a runner to bring him to the ground.
A Game for Everyone
Rugby requires that all the players in the team work together to achieve a common goal. Players use strength, speed, agility, and intelligence to meet their goal. Thus, rugby provides an opportunity for everyone—men and women, large and small, young and old— to participate and contribute.
