Important information you should know:
Emergency Action Plan Document

Hard work pays off...  See these rules.

We have started outdoor training
Monday and Wednesdays 6:00 to 8:00pm

When it is cold and you are exposed, you are not ready to engage in the kind of
activities we expect and I do not want you to show up in thin shirts, shorts and
wee sockets. There are occasions. when you are standing and quietly listening...
Buying the Hornet track pants and top is good. Touques etc. You must have boots,
mouth guard, other protective equipment is not neccesary but why not use it?
Invest in some protection.

Upcoming Events
Training Monday and Wednesday evenings 6:30 - 8 pm for 15's Begins April. Stay tuned.

If you can not make a training session or game, let us know, we do count on you being there for all of the sessions. I understand that there will be times when you have to miss. Fine. Just let us know.

History:

Past U16 Hornets have a proud and respected reputation as a solid side. Last year several players made the Provincial team and nine hornets played in the Alberta Summer Games. A fantastic opportunity for these players. Hard work is rewarded. Good job lads.

Last year in 2008, we will build on past teams success and add new players from the U14 side (seven of which made the U14 provincial team) into what should be a very solid team.

Strength, effort and dedication are expected and encouraged again this year, your coaches want your experience to be enjoyable. I believe at the U16 game you should have a decent level of fitness coming in. From our first practice in April to our last league games in July you are expected to work hard. Sure we'll have fun, sure you'll get dirty, sure you'll get a bruise, this is a tough but immensely enjoyable game to play and watch.

You will gain confidence, skills, get fit and meet friends that could last a lifetime. If you want to be the best rugby player you can be, then you have come to the right place.

Also this year a weekend tour has been budgeted for, more info on this is forthcoming.

See you round the pitch.

The Game We Play

Past and Present

Legend has it that the game of rugby union has its roots in an English town called Rugby, where a young boy grew tired of playing soccer at school and decided instead to pick up the ball in his hands and run with it.

Today, Rugby Union (more commonly known as "The glourious game that came down from the rugby gods to allow men and women to battle fairly" is prevalent throughout the world. In Calgary, it's played at all age by boys, girls, men, and women.

Safety First

Despite its reputation for being a rough sport, rugby promotes safety in all its laws. Safe rugby training is mandatory for coaches and officials and follows the International Rugby Board recomendations and practises. See www.IRB.com

For example, the collision-style "tackle" common in American and Canadian football (and even in hockey) is illegal in rugby. Instead, tacklers redirect the momentum of a runner to bring him to the ground. No blocking is allowed.

A Game for Everyone

Rugby requires that all the players in the team work together to achieve a common goal. Players use strength, speed, agility, and intelligence to meet their goal. Thus, rugby provides an opportunity for everyone—men and women, large and small, young and old— to participate and contribute.

Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1
: Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2
: The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3
: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4
: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5
: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6
: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7
: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try de-lousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8
: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9
: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10
: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11
: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.
